The Track

Jeff Daniel’s Test Track

You need to know that the enhancements you are making to your Jeep will allow it to improve performance in various off-road conditions. Any seasoned off-roader knows that testing can only be done with an actual off-road experience.

Our track here at Jeff Daniel’s has been designed to truly test you and your Jeep’s off-road capabilities. We have tried to incorporate the many obstacles you would encounter on an off-road adventure, while still remaining in the comfort of our backyard.

track diagram

Figure 1

2nd Pit With Off-Camber Bottom and Hair Pin Turn

This obstacle is 40 feet long, 3½ feet deep, has an off-camber bottom floor, and a 50-degree exit climb. Sometimes it’s filled to the top with water, and at other times it’s empty with a soupy, muddy, tread-clogging bottom that will surely stop you in your tracks. We suggest at a minimum at least 33-inch tires, and a rear locker to successfully negotiate this obstacle.

Figure 2

Articulation Pits/Log Crawl

These obstacles are a true test for your Jeep’s suspension. Having the ability for extreme articulation will be the key to success when negotiating these obstacles. With an already off-camber approach to the log crawl coming out of the articulation pits, sticking to your line is a bit of a trick. We suggest at a minimum at least 4-inches of lift, 33-inch tires, and at least a rear locker to successfully negotiate this obstacle.

Figure 3

Hill Climb/Pit

This obstacle is seen as the most difficult on the track. With the pits having unknown depths and tremendously off-camber bottoms, it takes great skill to always get the approach angle you want. Then with the sub 45-degree approach Angle/Climb, this task is not for the easy-hearted. We suggest at minimum 33-inch tires, a front and rear locker, along with high approach and departure angles on your Jeep and even with these, success isn’t a guarantee.

The track is located behind our facilities covering over 1/3 of an acre with a multitude of difficulties. The entrance to our track starts with a moderate log crawl climbing over about 3 telephone pole size logs that have some partial spacing. After you come off the logs you will enter one of our first pits of the track that measures 10 feet in length, and 3 feet at its deepest point. Depending on the time of year and current weather, our pits can be filled to the top with water, or have a nice soupy layer of mud waiting below to increase the difficulty.

Once you pull out of this pit, you will be entering our next pit that is over 40 feet long, and has a completely off-camber bottom making the depth on one side from 0–3 feet. If this wasn’t difficult enough, we’ve added in a hairpin turn towards the end, and a 50-degree climb to get out! If you make the climb out, you will be on top of our 23 foot long log bridge crossing, and caution is advised because one wrong turn and off you go with 5 foot drops on both sides! Once you maneuver the bridge you will enter another pit that stretches over 16 feet in length, 3 feet in depth, and full of hidden ruts and sink holes. If you have made it this far you're halfway there, but the best, or should I say the hardest, is yet to come! The next obstacle is a series of staggered sinkholes and pits, which will surely test your rig’s articulating abilities. Next is our true driver/rig challenge—the hill climb and descent. After leaving the staggered sinkholes, you will approach one of the two deepest pits of the course that leads into the hill climb. Entering the pit is all technique, because depths are unknown, and this pit has been known to swallow Jeeps whole. Once you enter and maneuver towards the hill, this is where your skill and your Jeep’s ability will definitely come into play. The hill climb is over 20 feet long, and depending on your approach angle and line you attempt, can be sub 45-degree angles. Few have been known to make it up this hill, and fewer than that make it on their first attempt, but if your skill and Jeep are sharp you can do it. When you make it to the top, this is when you can take a second to stop and look around at the view of the entire course and surroundings. Then it’s back down to earth as you descend the hill on approximately a 55-degree descent.  Yes, the second of our deepest pits with a tank trap style set-up and depths unknown. As you pull out of the pit you will enter another series of staggering sinkholes and pits that will surely throw you off-camber as you approach the final obstacle, the log crawl. The log crawl is over 30 feet long consisting of nearly 50 telephone pole style logs in different shapes, sizes, spacing, and height. Once (and if) you complete our track, you and your Jeep are ready for any outdoor adventure!
